Mimi Hölzl

This candy craze of a costume was designed by Daniela Ibarra as her depiction of the witch in Humperdinck's opera 'Hänsel & Gretel'. The costume serves as an allegory for the witch's intentions to lure little children into her home by offering them a desirable feast that is truly an inedible illusion.

 

It features a fat suit with detachable hunchback that deforms the silhouette of its wearer and helps her getting into characters. Skirt and jacket are covered with felt pastries, dyed wadding and nail-varnished gummy bears to create a trompe l'oeil of food.  Textile prints, quilting, expandable foam and hand-painted details add texture to this sculptural costume, bringing it to life.
